Curriculum: Design and Technology
Design and Technology prepares children to take part in the development of tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. We encourage children to become creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team.
They combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues in order to evaluate present and past design and technology. Our aim is for children to become discriminating and informed consumers and potential innovators. Children enjoy and experience great satisfaction in designing and making things e.g. Infant 2 are introduced to axles to make a vehicle. This is developed further in Year 6 (Prep. 4) in the making of an electric buggy.
To encourage creative thinking and enjoyment of the subject we hold a whole school Design & Technology day which is devoted to planning, making and evaluating. At the end of the day we all come together to view demonstrations and the different products made. There is a real buzz throughout the school and the boys appreciate how learning is fun!
Various activities the children are involved in on D&T day are:
Nursery and Reception: Chinese Hats and Chinese Dragons and tasting Chinese food
Infant 1: Paper weaving owls
Infant 2: Making a healthy sandwich
Prep 1: Constructing cuboids
Prep 2: Moving characters using levers
Prep 3: Pneumatics
Prep 4: Electric buggies
