Curriculum: Mathematics
Mathematics is a core subject which is studied by all boys from Nursery to Year 6 (Prep. 4).
Our aim is for the boys to enjoy mathematics, to develop accurate computational skills, to think logically and to apply their mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding to problem solving.
Opportunity is given to our boys to use their initiative, to co-operate with others, to persevere to complete tasks – becoming increasingly independent as they journey through the school.
Children study topics in number, shape and space, measure, problem solving and data handling. Emphasis is also placed on the boys developing accurate mental arithmetic skills and understanding.
Boys’ progress in maths is constantly monitored informally in daily lessons and in weekly tests as well as more formally in half yearly exams and annually in NFER and Optional SATs tests. This monitoring programme helps staff to ensure continuity and progress. Boys at St. Ambrose achieve very high standards in these Maths assessment tests – well above the National average.
Year 5 and 6 boys are thoroughly prepared for the demands of entrance examinations and consistently achieve excellent results.
Lessons are delivered using a variety of quality resources which encourages participation by every child.
Our involvement in the St. Ambrose College Maths Challenge and the Mathematical Society Challenge offers opportunities to our Year 6 (Prep. 4) boys to compete against other schools and children to develop problem solving strategies and techniques using their I.C.T. skills.
- Mathematics Displays enhance the boys learning.
- Prep. 1 Science Investigations.
- Mathematics is used in Science Investigations. Graphs are drawn accurately and averages calculated.
