Curriculum: Music

Music plays a very big part in the life of the boys at St. Ambrose Preparatory School. Our specialist music teacher has been trained in the Kodaly principles of Early Years Music, so right from the Nursery we follow the guidelines of Kodaly to help the boys to find their voice, to feel the pulse of the music and to grow in confidence.

During Key Stage 1, as well as the curricular music, the boys start to learn musical notation and then all are encouraged to learn the recorder.

At Key Stage 2 all boys are given the opportunity to take up instrumental lessons with our team of visiting teachers, and pupils are then prepared for the examinations of the Associated Board of The Royal School of Music.

We have a recorder ensemble, an orchestra and a choir all of which rehearse during lunchtimes on a weekly basis. There are many concerts and performance opportunities for all throughout the year including a regular weekly musical assembly for solos and small group performances. There is an early years and infant musical Nativity, a Christmas Mass, a Musical Evening for all the boys learning a musical instrument in school, an early years and infant summer concert and finally our summer concert and prize giving in which every boy in the juniors takes part.
