Overview: Organisation
There are three departments in the school:
- Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for 3 to 5 years olds
- The Infant Department for 5 to 7 year olds
- The Junior Department for boys between 7 and 11
All enjoy modern, airy classrooms in purpose-built accommodation. The main part of the building was erected in 1990 and extended in 1994. A further building development has just been completed providing a magnificent hall for assemblies and P.E., a music room, changing rooms, showers, toilets, a prayer room, a new computer suite and disabled access to all levels.
Boys generally join the school in the Nursery, Reception or at the beginning of the junior years and all receive an excellent grounding academically, socially and morally. Having passed the Entrance Examination at 11+, the vast majority of pupils move on to St. Ambrose College, which shares the same site. (The College is to be completely rebuilt within the next two years and will enjoy the most up-to-date facilities, some of which will be shared by Preparatory School pupils.)
St. Ambrose has an outstanding sporting tradition and encourages enjoyment and excellence in soccer, rugby, tennis, golf, cricket, cross-country, gymnastics and athletics, making full use of the nine acres of sports fields. An extensive list of fixtures continues throughout the year and sports courses are held during most holidays.
Music provides many exciting opportunities to perform and excel. An impressive team of peripatetic staff support curricular and extra-curricular activities. Good, enthusiastic singing is nurtured at all levels.
The new computer suite offers a wide selection of software to support many areas of the curriculum and restricted access to the internet for research.
Many trips and visits are arranged including a residential stay for Year 6 pupils at an outdoor adventure camp.
French is taught throughout the school, with the exception of the Early Years Foundation Stage.
The school is a registered Charity.
The Headmaster is a fully accredited member of I.A.P.S. (The Independent Association of Preparatory Schools).
